Field @ St. Michaels: The field portion of the workshop takes place at St. Michaels, a historic town situated on the banks of the Miles River on Maryland's Eastern Shore. From its humble beginnings as a tiny village in the mid 1600s and reputation as a ship building and seafood processing center, St. Michaels has transitioned into a tourist Mecca with museums, , historic homes, shops, restaurants, and beautiful waterfront views.
On the day of the field trip, the class will meet at 8:00 AM in front of the Hooper Straight Lighthouse on the grounds of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum to take advantage of the early morning light as it illuminates the lighthouse, wharf, boats, and exhibits. Along the waterfront, participants will have opportunities to photograph geese, swans, and other waterfowl along with herons, osprey, waterman, sailboats, skipjacks and other bay workboats. Students will find more shooting opportunities in the town, from shops with quaint window dressings to historic architecture from the colonial, federalist, and Victorian period.
Students are responsible for their own transportation & entrance fees. St. Michaels is located on the Eastern Shore of Maryland across the Bay Bridge and near the town of Easton. Estimated drive time from Baltimore varies between 1.5 and 2 hours depending on your point of origin. If you are interested in staying in a hotel nearby on the evening prior to the field trip, a list of accommodations can be found on the Chamber of Commerce web site. http://www.stmichaelsmd.org
