Do you own a digital camera and wonder why your images fail to live up to your expectations? Do you know how to improve your photos using computer software? In this class you will learn how to manipulate and optimize your images in the digital darkroom. In a computer lab with Adobe Photoshop Elements software, you will learn how to upload images to the computer, resize files for their intended use, remove distractions, add special effects, and save the results. You will learn how to enhance color, alter contrast, adjust exposure, add text, eliminate red-eye, level horizons, and prepare files for printing and publication on the web. You will become familiar with basic editing tools such as the paint brush, eraser, crop tool, paint bucket, magic lasso, magic wand, clone stamp, and healing brush. In addition, you will learn about filters, layers, histograms, and other software features.

As a bonus, you will be able to brush up your camera skills at the Baltimore Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. Located within Druid Hill Park, this grand Victorian-era glass building is a horticultural showcase. Recently renovated, the original Palm House and Orchid Room have been joined by 3 new greenhouses each representing different geographical climatic regions - Desert, Tropics, and Mediterranean. Outside a formal garden features local plantings. Patterned leaves, textured bark, colorful flowers including exotic orchids, and the conservatory's unique architecture will provide you with a wide range of photographic subjects. As you explore this fascinating environment, the instructor will provide one on one instruction on camera operation and basic photographic principles of lighting, composition, exposure, perspective, and more. Digital terms such as pixels, resolution, compression, noise, white-balance, and ISO will be covered. This class provides the perfect combination of field practice, classroom discussions, and hands-on experience in the digital darkroom.

Bring to class -- camera manual, digital camera, fresh batteries, storage media (compact flash, SD, XD, or other storage media compatible with your camera) and a memory card reader with a USB connector. Students should be familiar with rudimentary PC and digital camera operation.
