The program will begin with a Friday evening orientation meeting at the Best Western Motel in Chincoteague adjacent to the refuge. Based on Irene's findings from her scouting trip prior to the arrival of the group, the following will be discussed-departure time, current field conditions, potential subjects, equipment needed, safety, field ethics, and other logistical details. Prior to dawn on Saturday, the class participants will depart for the wildlife refuge to photograph sunrise and take advantage of the soft, warm early morning light. Potential subjects include wildlife, sand dunes, shells, the surf, the lighthouse, fall flowers, fishing boats, fisherman, and local architecture. Because wildlife is protected on the refuge, animals are abundant and unusually tolerant of humans to the pleasure of most photographers. Potential wildlife subjects include Sika and whitetail deer, fox, otters, raccoons, ponies, herons, rails, swans, geese, ducks, shorebirds and other resident and migratory species. Situated on the Atlantic Flyway, Chincoteague is a resting and refueling spot for birds heading south for the winter. In Mid-November, it is possible for 30,000 to 40,000 migrating snow geese to be on the refuge at one time.

Notes: Warm clothing is advised since it can be cold during this time of year. Consider bringing extra batteries and chemical hand warmers to keep your fingers flexible if temperatures drop below freezing. Dress in layers & bring rain gear since activities will proceed despite the weather.

Bring lenses (wide angle to telephoto); camera manual; spare recently charged batteries; several memory cards; polarizing, gradient, & neutral density filters; sturdy tripod; laptop computer; memory card reader for transfer of images to your computer; and CDs for image transfer to main computer for display (don't use thumb drives).

The orientation and discussion sessions will be held at the Best Western Motel on Madox Rd. just before the bridge to Assateague Island. Over the weekend, rooms should be available at the Best Western and at other hotels in the town of Chincoteague. Depending on your departure point, Chincoteague is approximately 3.5 to 4 hours from Baltimore.

The number of students limited to 10.
